Broccoli’s Arrival in Dirt

Cinnamon Bun

Broccoli’s Arrival in Dirt, also known as The Call to Adventure, is the decisive threshold between Broccoli Bunch’s ordinary life on Earth and her new existence in Dirt. A mysterious quest interface interrupts a mathematics class, she accepts an invitation to save the world, and reality changes around her in an instant. The event is not merely transportation to a fantasy setting: it establishes the system of quests, Classes, skills, and rewards that will govern her new life, while also framing her arrival as a willing sacrifice rather than an accidental abduction.

The Quest in the Classroom

Broccoli is introduced as someone who actively searches for adventure, whether in ordinary life or in books. The setting initially resists that desire. She is sitting in mathematics class, trying to maintain her grades during the final months before high school ends, while expecting the wider world to open afterward. The interruption comes as an enormous, unmistakable sound that resembles a cowbell falling into a fifty-five-gallon drum, although the other students do not react to it.

A thin, nearly translucent box then appears in front of her, suspended without visible support. Its message announces that a great evil has taken root in the world and that she has been called upon to save it. The interface offers only two choices: acceptance or refusal. Broccoli tests its apparent reality by moving her head and watching the box follow her gaze, while the surrounding students remain unable to see it. That contrast makes the summons private and isolating: the quest is presented to her alone, even though it occurs in the middle of a crowded classroom.

Her response is shaped by both curiosity and family influence. Broccoli considers what her parents would say, but they are described as people seized by wanderlust and as the source of her own desire to see the world. She therefore imagines that they would accept the quest immediately. With a grin, she presses the acceptance button. The system answers that the world thanks her for her sacrifice, a formulation that turns her excitement into an ominous promise of cost.

Crossing into Dirt

The transition is instantaneous. Broccoli falls onto the ground, and the familiar classroom disappears before she can properly process what has happened. The desks, chairs, snowy courtyard, distant traffic, and mechanical hum of the school are replaced by birdsong, frogs, and wind moving through trees. The sensory change marks a complete rupture rather than a journey between locations; there is no road, vehicle, or intermediate passage connecting the two worlds.

She finds herself inside the remains of a building. The floor is made from large, interlocking flat stones, while the walls combine different kinds of stone with thick wooden beams rising toward the ceiling. Rotten tables, crushed chairs, mulch, mould, and decay fill the room. The ruined interior gives her arrival an immediate material consequence: the promise of a grand adventure begins not in a palace or a safe settlement but in an abandoned, contaminated space that must be understood and eventually cleaned.

The arrival also places Broccoli in the state of being Devoid of Classes. That absence does not last long. After she performs a Special Action while still without a Class, the system announces that she has unlocked a new Class. The reward is the Cinnamon Bun Class, accompanied by increases to Health and Stamina. Her first advancement therefore emerges from action rather than prior status: the new world recognizes and classifies her only after she has crossed its threshold and acted within it.

The Cinnamon Bun Identity

The system defines the Cinnamon Bun as too good for the world, pure, supportive, and friendly, with nature itself said to smile upon it. Its stated purpose is to cleanse the world of impurities in the name of love and justice. Broccoli finds the description unhelpfully smug, yet she also recognizes that its characterization of her as somewhat naive is not entirely false. The Class turns personality into mechanics, making friendliness, support, purity, and cleansing part of an actionable identity.

This identity immediately produces a tension between expectation and reality. Broccoli imagines that the new Class might eventually lead to a Dragon Rider Class, revealing that she treats the system as a structure of future possibilities rather than a fixed destiny. At the same time, the Cinnamon Bun Class directs her toward support and purification while Dirt repeatedly confronts her with undead creatures, dungeons, corruption, mud, and bodily disgust. Her arrival thus establishes the central irony of her role: an apparently gentle and comic Class must operate in environments where cleaning is both a practical skill and a form of combat.

The earliest development of that role is concrete. Broccoli receives Cleaning, and although the skill begins at a low rank, it improves her speed and instincts for cleanliness. She uses a showerhead, mop, and bucket to scrub the ruined floor, discovering that the spray is weak and that the process rapidly consumes mana. Cleaning is therefore neither effortless nor symbolic alone; it demands time, resources, and sustained physical work. Later, the same magic helps her manage the consequences of danger, including the need to clean a finger after touching a poisoned cake.

The World’s Rules and First Dangers

The event introduces a world that communicates through game-like prompts. Quests, Classes, levels, skills, mana, and Class Points appear as readable systems of feedback. The interface does not merely describe Dirt; it assigns Broccoli a place within it and rewards behavior that aligns with that assignment. Completing an action associated with her Class unlocks both the Cinnamon Bun Class and, later, the skill Cute, when an awkward attempt to place her hat is judged to fit the Class.

The first dungeon experiences make the system’s promises more dangerous. Broccoli recognizes a room containing a cake marked Eat Me as an Alice in Wonderland reference, but Insight identifies the cake as poisoned and a nearby potion as a poisoned shrinking potion. When she later returns through the dungeon, another Eat Me cake is identified as a poisoned cake of enlargening. The familiar storybook imagery is therefore rebuilt as a hazardous mechanical environment in which recognition of a cultural reference does not make the object safe.

The dungeon’s presentation becomes increasingly theatrical. A clean chamber is decorated with red-and-black banners bearing hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades, while a nearby sign announces a royal decree forbidding disturbance. The setting evokes the court associated with the Cardstock Queen of Hearts, but its playful heraldry is backed by real danger. Broccoli encounters the Zombie of Cheshire, identified as a level-five boss despite the dungeon’s expected level range of two to four. The discrepancy raises immediate doubts about whether the system has lied or whether the Cheshire figure is the dungeon’s true end boss, turning the apparent rules of the new world into another source of uncertainty.

Expansion Beyond the Threshold

Broccoli’s arrival continues to shape her choices long after the classroom has vanished. She learns to rely on Jumping as one of her strongest skills, using it to navigate difficult terrain and escape danger. During an encounter in deep mud, she follows Amaryllis’s instruction to sink lower to avoid discovery while Orange hides near her neck; the comic awkwardness of the scene coexists with genuine danger and demonstrates how far her new life has moved from the orderly classroom she left behind.

Her growing competence does not erase the physical costs of Dirt. After escaping the Dunwich abominations, she reaches safety beside Mister Dryad and is overwhelmed by the smell of the creatures, which she experiences as raw sewage and struggles not to vomit. The contrast between her cleansing-oriented Class and the world’s accumulated filth is especially sharp here: survival first forces her to endure contamination, after which the impulse to cleanse becomes emotionally and practically necessary.

The arrival also opens a network of relationships and possible futures. Gunther explains that he once worked as an arts dealer in Cinderrun before changing his Class to revive his true companion, Throat Ripper, and thereafter travelling from place to place because Classes associated with undeath are poorly regarded. His history gives Broccoli a later example of how Class choice can demand sacrifice, social exclusion, and the remaking of a life. In another conversation, she explains her own desired role as ranged DPS, combining Cleaning magic against undead with movement based on Jumping, even though Amaryllis does not understand the expression and associates it with Broccoli’s mysterious home.

By the time Broccoli and Amaryllis consider the Toyland dungeon, described as approximately levels four through seven with suggested adventurer levels of eight to ten, Broccoli’s original leap has become an ongoing pattern of deliberate risk. The acceptance button in the classroom began the process, but each subsequent dungeon, skill, alliance, and danger renews the same decision in a more complicated form. Broccoli’s arrival in Dirt is therefore both a single displacement and the founding action of her identity: she enters a world that translates ethics into system rewards, confronts its impurities through a Class built around friendship and cleansing, and turns an apparently impossible summons into a sustained adventure.
